For the 2021-2022 school year, the Ministry of Education has implemented mandatory self-screening for all staff and students in schools in Ontario.

The 2021 Graduating Class of St. Thomas Aquinas High School walked across the stage at the Whitecap Pavllion on the Kenora Harbourfront last night. To ensure COVID-19 safety protocols were observed and capacity limits under the Whitecap Pavilion were upheld, the class was divided into two groups and each class member was allowed to invite two people to attend one of two in-person graduation ceremonies.

Two new Student Trustees were welcomed at the Boardroom table at the June 15 Board Meeting. Antonie-Marie Skead was elected as the Indigenous Student Trustee, while Elizabeth Favreau was elected as the incoming junior Student Trustee. Maxwell Froese will assume the role of senior mentor Student Trustee.

The grade 7 and 8 St. Thomas Aquinas French Immersion Classes recently submitted films into the Festival de Théatre de Jeunesse. While all the students produced fantastic work, two groups wound up sweeping the categories.

The Kenora Catholic District School Board held its final Board Meeting of the 2020 - 2021 School Year on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

Today the Ontario government announced that remote learning will continue across Ontario for the remainder of the 2020 - 2021 school year.

As a community, we start this week with a sense of loss, as our country mourns the 215 children whose remains were found at the Kamloops Residential School in the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation territory. May we find reconciliation through service and compassion.

The KCDSB Summer Learning Program is a three-week virtual summer learning program from July 5-July 23, 2021. This program will be based on addressing gaps in literacy and numeracy skills for students in kindergarten to Grade 8.

On April 12, 2021, the Premier of Ontario announced that all Ontario elementary and secondary schools will move to remote learning following the Spring Break. There was no return date announced for in-person learning as that will depend on the community spread of COVID-19. KCDSB schools start remote learning on April 20.

Over two weeks, the students in Mrs. Shouldice’s Grade 5 class from Pope John Paul II School took on the challenge of planning and constructing a “Stations of the Cross” experience for the Kenora community within the Kenora Catholic campus.

Kenora Catholic’s annual Early Years Arts Festival looked a bit different this year. Instead of gathering at Pope John Paul II School for a day of fun Arts experiences, families participated in 4 separate virtual events, spread out over the month of March. Families from Kenora, Ear Falls and Red Lake were offered an array of Arts experiences that they could approach with their own interests and strengths, from the comfort of their own home.

From March 29 to April 6, 2021,all KCDSB classes and Kenora community members are invited to pray and experience the Stations of the Cross alongside the large crosses placed on the walkway between the CEC, PJP, and SMB.

Students in the Grade 7 and 8 Ojibway classes at St. Thomas Aquinas High School have welcomed Paul White into his new role as Director of Education.

When we look back on our school experiences, it’s rarely the assignments we remember. It’s the people and how those people made us feel that stand out. The same rings true for our students today.

The Board of Trustees for the Kenora Catholic District School Board is proud to announce the appointment of Paul White as the new Director of Education and Secretary-Treasurer for the Kenora Catholic District School Board effective January 1, 2021.

Trustees acclaimed incumbent Teresa Gallik as Chair for 2021 and acclaimed incumbent Mike Favreau as Vice Chair for 2021. Gallik is entering her third term as Chair, and Favreau is entering his second term as Vice Chair; combined, the pair has over 40 years of experience on the Board of Trustees.

The Kenora Catholic District School Board (KCDSB) and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) successfully negotiated a new Collective Agreement that represents Education Assistants, Early Childhood Educators and Lunch Hour Monitors. The agreement was reached on November 23, 2020 and will run through until August 31, 2022.

Trustee Jeffrey White made a meaningful tribute to Dr. Derek Haime, Director of Education, at his final Board Meeting on December 15. Trustee White gifted two healing eagle feathers to Derek Haime, in grateful recognition for his leadership during the past two years.

Dr. Derek Haime has announced his resignation, effective December 31, 2020. He has accepted a position with the Ontario College of Teachers as the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer to be closer to his family in Southern Ontario. Paul White has accepted the leadership role of Director of Education, effective January 1, 2021.

The Kenora Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce that effective October 1, 2020, Jamey Robertson will assume the role of Principal of Kenora Catholic’s new St. Isidore Virtual School.

The St. Isidore Virtual School community have chosen their new logo. They chose the logo depicting the white cross at the center of the pages of a book, representing the Bible, with data information bits rising from the center of the logo. It was designed in all the colours of Kenora Catholic’s schools to symbolize that although St. Isidore Virtual School is a unique community, it’s also deeply connected to all the schools.

The Kenora Catholic District School Board is excited to welcome a new Saint to the Catholic family of schools – St. Isidore Virtual School. The school was aptly named after Saint Isidore of Seville, who is recognized in the Roman Catholic Church as the patron saint of computers and the internet.

The Kenora Catholic District School Board’s 2020 Summer Learning Program was a success, according to principal Hilary Aiken. Over 60 students actively took part in the 3-week program, which ran virtually.

Ontario’s Education Minister Stephen Lecce recently met virtually with students in the St. Isidore Virtual School Business Accounting class. Students were able to speak with the minister and ask questions.
