Lifting of Health and Safety Measures in Schools

Many of you will have heard the news that the province is lifting health and safety measures after the March Break to support a return to more normal learning environments. This will be welcome news for some, while others may be more cautious in their response. During this time of transition, we must remain kind, considerate and respectful towards those who continue to wear a mask as comfort levels and circumstances vary. You can read the statement from Dr. Kieran Moore, Chief Medical Officer of Health here.

Key school-related changes

• Effective March 21st, masks are no longer required in schools for staff, students or visitors, and wearing a mask will be a personal choice that is respected.
• Schools are no longer required to cohort or distance indoors or outdoors and will be moving towards normal learning conditions.
• Assemblies and field trips will once again be permitted.
• Graduation celebrations may take place in June.
• The provincial school and child care screening tool has been updated to reflect the new isolation requirements depending on vaccination status.

What is continuing?

• Staff and students are still required to self-screen using the provincial school and childcare
screening tool before attending school.
• Personal Protective Equipment (masks and eye protection) will continue to be available as
needed until the end of the school year.
• Hand hygiene, improved ventilation and enhanced cleaning practices will continue.
• Attendance data will continue to be reported and posted to the Ministry of Education until
April 14th.
• Rapid Antigen Tests will continue to be available to staff and students for symptomatic
testing.

Tutoring and Summer Learning Programs

The Ministry will provide funding to invest in tutoring support for students beginning this year and opportunities for summer learning programs. Staff are currently working on how best to implement our programs and information will be shared once it’s available. Mental Health and Well-being The Ministry of Education is providing additional funding to support mental health, well-being, and equity initiatives to help students recover and get back on track from the pandemic. Our team is working on how to implement this enhanced programming and support for the 2022–2023 school year.

Return to Normal Learning Environments

As we plan to return to much anticipated normalcy after March Break, we will continue to be prepared to adapt as needed. We always rely on Dr. Kit Young-Hoon and the Northwestern Health Unit and our Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore for guidance on health related issues. Dr. Moore continues to advocate that we need to remain vigilant and stay home
when we are sick.

We are looking forward to school assemblies, guest speakers, field trips, and a full selection of extracurricular, Graduation activities and ending the 2021 – 2022 school year in celebration and community. We can’t wait to see smiles again for those who choose not to wear a mask.
