The three students, Maxwell, Antonie-Marie and Elizabeth, will be sworn into the role of Student Trustee for the Kenora Catholic District School Board at the start of the 2021 – 2022 school year.

At the May 18, 2021, Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to amend Policy #9 – Board Operations, to include a third Student Trustee to represent the voice and perspective of First Nation, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) students across the system. The change in policy created another permanent Student Trustee position on the Board, increasing the number of Student Trustees from two to three.

Julia Tkachuk will graduate in June after serving a two-year term as Student Trustee and will be attending the University of Calgary in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.

“We offer a heartfelt thank you to Julia Tkachuk for her contributions over the past two years, and we look forward to working with Maxwell, Antonie-Marie and Elizabeth as we work together to progress our vision of Growing, Investing and Engaging,” says Teresa Gallik.

In her final report as Student Trustee Julia thanked the Board of Trustees for the opportunity. “These last two years have taught me so much about myself and our community within the KCDSB, the experience will not be forgotten,” said Julia Tkachuk in her closing comments. “There is no doubt that Maxwell, Antonie and Elizabeth will make an excellent team and become great ambassadors for St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Thank you all for this amazing opportunity and for supporting me every step of the way. I will miss your smiling faces, virtual and in person, as I move on to this next chapter of my life. Best wishes to the Trustees for the next years, and I hope you all have a great summer.”

Maxwell Froese thanked Julia for her contributions.  "I, unfortunately have never had the opportunity to present a Student Trustee report alongside Julia in person, however, it does not hinder my appreciation for everything she has done for our school community and all of Kenora during her presence at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Julia, you are an exemplary Catholic role model, and your shoes will most definitely be hard to fill. I wish you the best of luck with all of your future endeavors. You will be missed."

Teresa Gallik, Chiar, presented Julia and Max with a plaque honouring their dedication and service as Student Trustees for the 2020 - 2021 school year.

Student Trustees serve a vital role at the boardroom table, representing students in decisions about education and keeping their peers informed about important information that impacts their education. They make monthly reports at the Regular Board Meetings, attend provincial conferences and are called upon to participate in special projects for the Board.
