The Kenora Catholic District School Board is excited to appoint two new Student Trustees for the 2022 – 2023 school year. St. Thomas Aquinas High School held elections on April 26, and Zhaawan Kavanaugh was elected as the incoming First Nation Student Trustee, while Josh Pitt was elected as the incoming Catholic Student Trustee.

Elizabeth Favreau will continue for a second term serving as Catholic Student Trustee and will assume the mentor role, leading and supporting the Student Trustee team throughout the year. Together the Student Trustees will bring forward student voice at the Kenora Catholic District School Board.

“Being chosen as a Student Trustee is exciting, and I am a little nervous, but I know I will do great. This is a big opportunity for me. It is an honour and I am willing to use this opportunity for First Nation, Métis and Inuit students to be heard and provide leadership for my peers.”

“I am beyond excited about this opportunity. This is something I have had my sights on for a while and I feel grateful about the opportunity to learn more about this position. I am hoping that through this new position, I will have the opportunity to make a difference here at Kenora Catholic as well as develop skills that I need in the future.”

At the May 17 Board Meeting, Student Trustees Elizabeth Favreau and Antonie-Marie Skead, introduced the new Student Trustees.

Favreau presented, “Josh is an excellent, outspoken Grade 10 student who is an active member of our school’s sports teams. He participated in this year’s Model United Nations and is an active member of our school’s interact club. Josh has very strong leadership qualities and will be an asset to the team in the coming years.”

Skead presented, “Zhaawan is an Indigenous Grade 11 student active in art, music, and dancing. She has many qualities for being a great role model for all FNMI students by being involved and making changes. Zhaawan will make an amazing leader in the coming years for FNMI students.”

“The Board of Trustees are delighted to welcome Zhaawan and Josh as our incoming Student Trustees,” said Chairperson Teresa Gallik. “Josh and Zhaawan are exceptional role models at St. Thomas Aquinas High School and have demonstrated a commitment to their Catholic education, peers, and community. We have great faith that our Student Trustees will make many contributions throughout their term at the Board table, and we are looking forward to working with them.”

Student Trustees serve a vital role at the boardroom table, where they can hear from decision-makers and learn about new programs and initiatives across the Board. They represent students in decisions about education and keep their peers informed about important information that impacts education. They make monthly reports at the Regular Board Meetings, attend provincial conferences, and are called upon to participate in special projects for the Board.

The Student Trustees will receive their Rite of Commissioning in September when they begin their term of office.
