At the Kenora Catholic District School Board we recognize the importance of taking meaningful steps towards reconciliation with our FNMI families and communities. With the announcement of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and in the lead-up to Orange Shirt Day, Kenora Catholic will be offering programming to students on a variety of topics throughout the entire week.

While this initiative is a small part of our journey, we know it is important to speak with students about the impact residential schools had and continue to have on its survivors and their families while also celebrating the incredible teachings and traditions that FNMI culture brings to our schools.

Monday The Truth of our History - The Orange Shirt Story  When we hurt others, part of healing is telling the truth. The Orange Shirt Story reminds all of us of the history that was hidden, a history that stole language, culture, family relationships, and spirituality. Today we invite you to share that story and ensure that everyone knows the truth of our shared history.
Tuesday Kinship with the Land and Each Other  “From the realms of the human world, the sky dwellers, the water beings, forest creatures and all other forms of life, the beautiful Mother Earth gives birth to, nurtures and sustains all life. She is the basis of who we are as “real human beings” that include our languages, our cultures, our knowledge, and wisdom to know how to conduct ourselves in a good way. If we listen from the place of connection to the Spirit that lives in all things, Mother Earth teaches what we need to know to take care of her and all her children.” - Assembly of First Nations
Wednesday Our Family is Beautiful Students will explore, via the Celebration of Beauty resource box, the beauty, knowledge, and richness of our First Nation and Metis brothers and sisters. This box is intended to offer a more complete picture of their story and strengths.
Thursday Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day Everyone is welcome to join the System Virtual Prayer and Program at 9:05 a.m. The link will be provided at a closer date.
Friday Reaching out in Reconciliation On this day we are inviting learners of all ages to engage in an act of reconciliation by extending a note or picture of forgiveness and hope with our neighboring First Nation communities. Learners are invited to draw a picture of our hoped-for future side by side, to offer a note of encouragement or a prayer in acknowledgement of the losses our brothers and sisters have encountered, and so on. What are students willing to do to make sure all First Nation and Metis students feel safe and included in our schools?

We’ve introduced a number of new roles at Kenora Catholic and throughout the week we will be sharing with you how they are working to support our students and families.
