It is with heavy hearts that the Kenora Catholic District School Board (KCDSB) extends our deepest sympathy to Wauzhushk Onigum Nation. We stand with our staff, families, students and surrounding communities to collectively mourn the uncovering of 171 possible grave markers during a search of the former St. Mary’s Indian Residential School site.

The gravity of loss and trauma that the Indigenous communities of Kenora and all of Canada are experiencing weighs heavily on us all. We express our significant empathy for the loss of children who belonged to loving families and communities.

The Kenora Catholic District School Board has lowered its flags to half-mast to honour the children, grieving families and communities.

With this discovery, we reaffirm our continued work with the Ontario Ministry of Education, Elders, students, and the community to educate every generation about First Nation, Métis, and Inuit history as we actively work towards the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action.

To everyone affected by this discovery, please ensure you take the time you need during this difficult time and don’t be afraid to reach out to any of the Mental Health resources below if you need support.

At the request of Wauzhushk Onigum Nation, please allow their need for privacy as they collectively grieve as a community.
