Students Learning OjibwayStudents Learning Ojibway on a White BoardWelcome– no matter creed, spirituality, gender, sexuality, or faith world view, you are welcome at Kenora Catholic.

Kenora Catholic continues to support the Anishinaabemowin language in our schools through daily language instruction in all of the English elementary schools. Our resident Elder works in partnership with our Religious Education coordinator to ensure that the Anishinaabe and Metis spirituality and culture are integrated into our events calendar, into our prayer celebrations, and into our school communities' regular life. We journey forward as one people, supporting one another to live a good life that the Creator may continue to bless us with what we need. Kenora Catholic authored and illustrated a children’s book called Wiikondim: Feasting and Pow Wow in digital and print form to enable all students and the broader community to understand the spiritual practices within feasts and to participate more fully.

In partnership with the graduation coach at the high school, students are supported to obtain the credits needed to matriculate. The First Nation guidance counsellor and Elder support students and educators for learning success from the Anishinaabe world view.

Though difficult to recruit First Nations educators to work within our system, due to barriers such as OCT qualifications, Kenora Catholic’s equity team continue to advocate for them and hope to encourage more current students to obtain their teaching qualifications and return to our board that our staff may better reflect the students that they serve.
