(September 25, 2019) - Today Education, Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) results were released for the 2018 – 2019 assessments in Grade 3 and 6 reading, writing and mathematics, Grade 9 applied and academic mathematics as well as the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).

Director of Education, Derek Haime issued the following statement:

"Increasing our students' performance in all areas continues to be a priority for Kenora Catholic. We will emphasize the importance of literacy across the system, and build upon the recent successes in both the primary and junior panels in our Board and School Improvement Plans for Student Achievement and Well-being. Our plans will focus on spiritual development as well as excellence in our strategic pillars of Growing, Investing and Engaging. Our recent results show that our Numeracy Leads, at all of our elementary schools, are supporting teachers with diversified instructional strategies and helping students acquire deeper levels of content knowledge on their learning journey."

Kenora Catholic's Grade 9 students continue to experience success in mathematics. 91 percent of students scored at or above the Provincial Standard in the Grade 9 Academic Course; scoring 7 percent above the Province. 2018 – 2019 was the seventh consecutive year in which 85 percent or more of students in academic mathematics achieved at or above the Provincial Standard.

Students in applied mathematics saw similar successes. At 47 percent, the Grade 9 applied mathematics results are a 7 percent increase from the 2017 – 2018 results and are 3 percent above the Province. Kenora Catholic's Grade 9 applied mathematics results have steadily increased over the last three years.

"We are pleased to see the strategies that were implemented in mathematics are having a direct impact on our students' successes," says Dr. Haime. "We will continue to work closely with our instructional teams and focus student and teacher learning on the fundamentals of math and ensure literacy strategies are emphasized in all instructional areas for the greatest impact."
