There is a new art installation in the chapel at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The 16-foot fused glass mosaic mural blends the Catholic Graduate Expectations with the Grandfather Teachings. Approximately 40 students worked on the art piece, under the guidance of Artist in Residence, Betty Wires.
Nancy Prouty, Art Teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, talks about the concept for the piece.
"We wanted to create a piece of artwork that would blend the seven Catholic Graduate Expectations with the seven Grandfather Teachings. We worked with Howard Copenace, our Elder in Residence and other local Elders. What the Elders revealed through the process is that there is now an eighth Grand Father Teaching that is unique to our Treaty #3 area. The eighth Grandfather Teaching is a beautiful teaching about forgiveness and is represented by the rock. All of these teachings are visually displayed in the artwork."
