September 30th is declared Orange Shirt Day by the Orange Shirt Day organization in recognition of the harm the residential school system caused to children and affirmation of the commitment to ensure that every child matters.

The Kenora Catholic District School Board recognizes Orange Shirt Day as an opportunity to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

KCDSB Staff Wear Orange

All KCDSB staff are encouraging to wear an orange shirt, garment or scarf. Anything orange as symbolism of unity and hope. Staff will gather at St. Thomas Aquinas High School for a First Nation, Metis and Inuit Professional Development Day. KCDSB Staff will have a carousel of speakers including Elders, Anishinaabe Abinoojii Family Services, Rat Portage Round House, and the Kenora Chiefs Advisory. Staff will be learning about First Nation, Metis and Inuit culture, history and traditions including truth and reconciliation.

St. Thomas Aquinas High School Hosts Orange Shirt Day Assembly

St. Thomas Aquinas High School will be hosting an Orange Shirt Day on October 3rd. This date was chosen by the school to recognize the signing of the treaty of Treaty #3, which occurred on October 3, 1873. Staff and students will be encouraged to wear an orange shirt. The day will begin with students in the foyer handing out orange ribbons followed by an assembly in the gym at 11:30 a.m. Oranges will be provided to everyone who attends the assembly
