STA culinary students impress with dessert showcase

Cheesecakes, a chocolate fountain, cupcakes, mousse and trifles were just a few of the desserts that enthralled those with a sweet tooth at the Just Desserts showcase this week. The five Grade 11 and 12 culinary students put on the event for their class's culminating activity.

"This was all for our culminating so it was really interesting. We opened a nice little buffest style café house," said Grade 11 student John Everson-Corriveau. "I made the chocolate mousse, the gluten-free cheesecake cups and build your own cheesecake with different toppings, and the filling for the chocolate fountain. I also put it together which was kind of nerve racking in case of a chocolate disaster."

Fortunately for John, there was no chocolate disaster, only satisfied customers. The other culinary students showcasing their skills included Alex Albanese-Higgins, Tai Bird, Jordan Sanderson and Dakota Cameron. The class is taught by Katie McNulty, who helped the students design the menu for the evening.

Sanderson said she's learned a lot over the semester and explained what she'll be doing with that knowledge.

"I'd like to start making supper for my family at home," she said.

Everson-Corriveau added what he'll be taking away from the class.

"We all need to eat so you should probably learn how to cook. I've gotten a lot more comfortable touching raw meat. It was something I wasn't comfortable with, but if you wanted a good grade in this class you have to get right into everything. Now it's nice cooking dinners for my family," he said.

The desserts were served buffet style with candle-lit tables available for guests to sit at. There was also musical accompaniment with all proceeds from ticket sales going towards the arts department.
