First Responders

A Grade 4/5 classroom at École Ste Marguerite Bourgeoys was overrun with first responders on Wednesday, but not for any type of actual emergency.

"We invited everybody here, nurses, doctors, police, firefighters, air and land paramedics and we made cards for everyone because we wanted to say thank-you for everything everybody's done for us and the whole town," said Grade 5 student Moia Chagnon.

Wednesday marked the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon in the United States. In Canada it is commemorated with National Day of Service, an opportunity for everyone to thank first responders as well as show the same kind of generosity and support that was abundant after the infamous attack.

"It's important because we should try to show a lot of respect for them because they deserve it, they help the whole town. They've saved so many lives, it's amazing," said Moia.

The students made cards and handed them out to all the service providers. They also spoke about how their lives have been helped by first responders including doctors and nurses both in class and in a short video.

Fire Chief Todd Skene was one of the representatives on hand and spoke about his reaction to getting the cards.

"This is fantastic. I don't know what to say, I had no idea what I was coming here for and now I have all these cards to take back to the other firefighters it's just fantastic," he said.

During the presentation Dr. Clay Hammett spoke about how important it is for all the emergency services to work as a team, a sentiment Skene echoed.

"It's amazing how, when things happen, we know our jobs and we work as a team," he said. "It doesn't matter if you're fire, EMS, police or at the hospital we all come together."
