Feasting at the Wiikondim
Mariette Martineau, Religious Education and Family Life Coordinator and Isobel White, Elder in Residence, unveiled a new book entitled Wiikondim! Feasting and Pow Wow that they co-authored and produced with Grace Dunford, Community Relations Lead and Illustrator Brian Steeves from Steeves Agencies Inc. The aim of the book is to bring awareness to students and teachers about Anishinaabeg tradition and culture. The entire team was present for the unveiling. Click here to learn more.
Wonder Emporium - Summer Learning Program
Derek Haime, Director of Education, provided a report on Kenora Catholic's summer learning program - Wonder Emporium. Haime presented on the successes of the program that ran in July and saw many students achieve gains in their learning. There were 54 students enrolled in the program, with 15 students immersed in the French Immersion program at École Ste Marguerite Bourgeoys. The program focused on maintaining or increasing literacy levels for students in Grades 1 - 3. Click here to learn more.

REPORTS
Policy #9 - Board Operations
Director Haime put forward a recommendation to Policy #9 - Board Operations to adjust the distance a Trustee needs to travel, round trip, to attend meetings of the Board, from 200 km to 160 km, for a Trustee to be eligible for reimbursement mileage.
Trustees Vaughn Blab and Jeffrey White declared a conflict of interest with item 10.2.1 Board Operations, declaring that they travel over 160 km round trip from their residence to attend meetings hosted at the Catholic Education Center. Trustees Blab and White signed Declarations of Conflict of Interest.
The Trustees passed the motion to approve the revisions to Policy #9 - Board Operations effective immediately.
2019 Staffing Report
Alison Smith, Superintendent of Business Services, provided the Trustees with a 2019 Staffing Report outlining the new hires for each location within Kenora Catholic.
Emergency Appointment
The Trustees approved a motion for Emergency Appointments to allow the Director of Education to appoint a temporary person to teach a class if there are no qualified teachers available. Director Haime explained that this motion comes into effect in the spring when new teachers graduate from University but are not yet fully qualified through the Ontario College of Teachers. This motion allows the Director to utilize these graduates for a period of 10 days, as outlined in Regulation 298. The Trustees accepted and passed the motion.
2020 - 2025 Multi-Year Strategic Plan
Derek Haime provided a presentation on the Board's new Multi-Year Strategic Plan. The Board officially approved its new 2020 - 2025 Multi-Year Strategic Plan well ahead of schedule. The new plan will be implemented in the fall of 2019 with full implementation in January 2020. Click here to read more.
Primary Class Size Report
Alison Smith provided a Primary Class Size Report identifying that the Board is compliant with the legislation in all areas.
Special Education Advisory Committee Appointment
The Board appointed Angela Holmstrom as representative and Sheelagh Reid as alternate on the Special Education Advisory Committee for the Kenora Association of Community Living for the 2019 - 2020 School Year.
December Board Meeting
The Trustees passed a motion that the Regular Board Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, December 17, 2019, be rescheduled to Tuesday, December 10, 2019.
Next Board Meeting
The next Board Meeting is on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. at the Catholic Education Center with video conferencing available from St. John School in Red Lake. Everyone is welcome to attend. Click here to see when all the meetings are scheduled for 2019 - 2020.
