Strategic Plan 2014 - 2019

Phyllis Eikre, Director of Education, provided a report on the Strategic Plan for 2014 - 2019. Eikre provided a snapshot of the progress and accomplishments of the Board's strategic plan under each of the four pillars: Strategic Priority One Increasing Student Achievement and Well-Being, Strategic Priority Two Fostering a Catholic Environment of Respect, Acceptance and Accountability, Strategic Priority Three Using Our Resources Wisely and Strategic Priority Four Discovering and Celebrating Joy in the Education Journey.

Eikre presented on a few new initiatives. In September, Isobel White was welcomed to the role of Elder in Residence. Isobel's role is to provide guidance, counsel and support to teachers and students, infusing cultural teachings and traditions into the curriculum. In September, the Board also hired two Ojibway Language Facilitators. Eikre explained that it's challenging to find Ontario College of Teachers certified teachers who are fluent in the Ojibway language. The board's new Ojibway Language Facilitators will work alongside the classroom teachers to teach the Ojibway language. The board also hired three new support staff for the board's multi-disciplinary team. The Student Success Advisors will work with high-risk students to provide special education supports and liaison with community agencies.

Eikre also shared that additional support for numeracy is a focus area for the board. Kenora Catholic has now placed numeracy support teachers at each elementary school to work at the elbow of teachers and students and support math instruction.
