The Saint's Cheerleading Team is bringing home national gold. They won first place in the senior small novice division in the Cheer Evolution National Championships over the weekend in Niagara Falls, April 6 - 8th.
"This competition is the pinnacle of the cheerleading season and one of the most prestigious achievements for our team," says Teresa Stevenson, Head Coach and Manager. "Our athletes went into this competition well prepared and ready to compete. We've been practicing and preparing for this competition and the team showed that they were ready for this level of competition."
The St. Thomas Aquinas High School Cheerleading team is only in its second year of operation. The team has 16 members in grades 7 to 12. Since try-outs back in September, the girls have been practicing twice a week during the regular season and three times per week leading into a major competition.
Flyer and Front Base Gabriella Novelli talks about the feeling of winning gold. "The moment that stands out for me is sitting in the awards ceremony with the team. We were all feeling nervous. Then they called the second place team, and we knew we had won. It was an amazing moment for us."
"This group of girls are more than a team, it's a Saint's family," says Stevenson. "We practice together, we pray together, and we support each other on and off the matt. As coaches, we could not be more proud of this team and how far they have advanced this season.
The Cheer Evolution National Championships brings together over 360 of the best cheerleading teams from across Canada and the U.S. Each team is vying for the national title in this prestigious competition. To learn more www.cheerevolution.com
