Students at Ècole Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys now have the opportunity to learn in an open-air classroom, thanks to a $5,000 Experiential Learning Grant provided by the Ministry of Education, donations and many hours of volunteer work from community members.

The project started when Teacher, Lee Anne Sewell's junior students said they wanted a place to go at recess where they could sit, read a book and have a comfortable place to hang out. After surveying the school community and students, they decided that an outdoor classroom/sunroom would fit the bill.

The students were involved in the project every step of the way from measuring, estimating and construction. They got to made decisions and saw the project through from start to finish.

"There is nothing like learning in nature," says Lee Anne. "I'm proud of this project and grateful to everyone who helped build the space. The out-door classroom took a bit longer to build than I anticipated but now that it's finished it's a wonderful addition to our school community."

The outdoor classroom is used as a gathering space for students during recess, lessons, plays, science activities, staff meetings and school gatherings, and can accommodate one or more classes at a time.

Thank you to everyone who dedicated their time to building this space.
