The Flight Crew is a new student leadership team at Pope John Paul II School that started in September 2017. The Flight Crew has a variety of different leadership crews that have responsibility in the school. A few examples of the Flight Crews are equipment room crew, tour guide crew, sound AV crew, peer mentor crew, landscaping crew, literacy crew, courage crew, weekly assembly crew, morning announcement crew, nutrition crew and faith celebration crew.
Students apply to be a Flight Crew member. They have to explain of why they think they would be great for the role they are applying for - for example, if they are someone who enjoys speaking in a crowd and likes to be "in the spotlight", then the Monday Morning Assembly crew might be just the right fit.
"The reaction from the students has been very positive," explains Tammy Bush, Vice Principal and Flight Crew Mentor. "They have a sense of pride in the work they do to make our school an awesome place each day."
At the November Board Meeting the students shared their thoughts about the Flight Crew. "We like that our school has added the Flight Crew so that students can be more involved in our school. We like it because we know more about what is happening and now we can give our suggestions. We know what we need and what we like so it makes school a fun place to learn and to spend our days."
"We can't imagine our school without our Flight Crew. They bring a new kind of life and energy to the daily life of PJPII and we greatly value their presence in our school," says Tammy.
There are currently about 40 students involved in Pope John Paul II School's Flight Crew. The students own their learning when they have opportunities to display leadership and to develop confidence in their abilities as they share their gifts with others.
