Open BookSt. Louis School was proud to be one of 3,982 events in Canada that participated in the Hour of Code during Computer Science Week December 5 - 9th. Students from St. Louis School in grades 3 - 6 had a chance to learn all about coding. Students were challenged with lines of code, debugging code and creative designing skills.

French as a Second Language and ITT Teacher, Stephanie Williams, organized St. Louis School's Hour of Code. She talks about why the event was important.

"Celebrating computer science week is important because technology will be an important part of our students' future. Hour of Code allowed students to explore the fundamentals of coding in a friendly and fun way. As students progressed through challenges, new programming concepts would get increasingly more difficult and build on previous skills, which kept the students engaged. These concepts tie into 21st Century Learning Skills that will equip students well for the future."

Throughout St. Louis School's 3-day Hour of Code event, students had several options of how they could participate. Students were block coding on Code.org, designing games on Scratch, creating apps using BitsBox, hands-on coding with Osmo and even building their own computers with Kano and Raspberry Pi.

"The most important thing that our students learned during the Hour of Code was that they are the creators and innovators of technology and can manipulate it in exciting ways," says Williams.

The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. To learn more about the Hour of Code visit: https://hourofcode.com/ca
