Congratulations to Martin Straight's Grade 11 Environmental Science Class from St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The class recently won $2,500 from the RBC-Evergreen Watershed Championships Award. The class has been studying the movement of water within the area of the school and testing the water quality in various areas throughout the Rabbit Lake watershed.
To date the class has collected over 60 samples, testing for pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and nitrate levels. They are also investigating phosphate levels, macro invertebrate assessments and indicators of invasive species.
The students claimed one in five national Watershed Champions Awards given to high school watershed projects.
The school plans to use the award money to fund more equipment next year as well as a possible visit to the Experimental Lakes Area.
