Grade 3 Entrepreneurs

The Grade 3 students have been making great strides in their Entrepreneurial Adventure program. They have decided that they will be developing a Pope John Paul II School cookbook that will be available for sale in the spring. They have been collecting recipes from throughout the school. They have also been very busy securing overhead funding to support their start-up costs.

A group of representatives from Mrs. Sharon Remmerswaal's class recently visited the Catholic Education Center to make a pitch to the Idea Lab team.

The setting was very much like an episode from CBC's popular Dragon's Den Series. The students pitched their project to the Idea Lab team (the Dragons) with the intention of securing a loan for $500. But the students came away with something even better.

Jamey Robertson, Innovation and Creativity Coordinator offered the students something different. "I offered the students $1,000 but with a catch. The students could borrow $500 that they would have to pay back but they could keep the other $500 as long as they utilize digital technology in the project."

Theresa Stevenson, E-Learning Contact and Jordan Temple, Numeracy Facilitator offered themselves as a human resource support to the project to teach the students how to use digital tools.

After a few minutes of deliberation as a group the students decided to accept both offers.

The money the students secured will go towards upfront costs such as craft supplies, fancy pencil crayons and markers as well as special paper and printing costs.

The Entrepreneurial Adventure team have been working very closely with their mentor Mike Grieves, from Stuff Magazine and Fifth Hammer Marketing Group.

The goal of the Entrepreneurial Adventure is to raise $1,000 with proceeds of the sale of the cookbook going to buy food for the Fellowship Center.
