St. John School showcased student leadership at their 3rd Annual Leadership Day event on May 6th to a very full gymnasium. A bus load of students from École Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys traveled from Kenora to Red Lake to celebrate with St. John School.

Students running the showThe event was designed to celebrate leadership at St. John School and allow visitors to have a glimpse into how the school is using Franklin Covey's 7 Habits of Effective People to develop leadership for all students. Every aspect of the celebration showcased student leadership. There were videos and songs and the students completely ran the show. They greeted the guests and handed out programs, ran the audio and visual, served the food and refreshments and were the master of ceremonies for the event. In fact the teachers sat back and just watched the celebration unfold and the students ran the show. Everyone in the school wore their blue SJS Leadership t-shirts. The event showcased an amazing amount of student leadership and empowerment.

Students greeting guestsAlso at the celebration was Andrew Westrik, Client Partner with the Franklin Covey Company. Andrew made a very special presentation to the school and Unveiled St. John School's Lighthouse Milestone banner to a standing ovation from the audience. The school has been working towards lighthouse recognition for the past 3 years and learned that they had achieved Lighthouse recognition for a well-rounded Leadership Model. You can watch a short video clip of Andrew Westrik unveiling the Lighthouse Banner.

There are only 9 other schools in Canada to achieve this level of recognition.
