St. John School introduced a program called Building Cultural Connections for First Nation Students. The program has been at the school for a year and aims to foster cultural connections while increasing attendance, achievement, and student engagement.

Lexi McLeish talks about the program, “this program is important for students at St. John School because it is crucial students have an opportunity to connect to their culture. Students build positive relationships with peers and adults, gain life skills, and receive extra academic support.”

The team at St. John School has been refining the program taking into account the needs of students while partnering with local elders and community organizations to enhance opportunities.

Through the support of Elder Imbeault, students learn about cultural teachings and practices and get to try snowshoeing, tapping syrup and drumming during visits. They also learn about the cultural significance of smudging. Another program focus is fostering life skills. Throughout the year, the focus was on self-advocacy, decision-making, problem-solving and critical thinking to help students gain confidence and independence.

At the May Board Meeting, Grade 6 students Graham Cockcroft and Grade 4 student Rayne Childforever shared that they enjoyed smudging because it helps them feel good.

Lexi recognized the contributions of the Cultural Achievement, Support and Engagement Program, the Red Lake Indian Friendship Centre, Elder Imbeault and many community members.
