Nothing but blue skies, rosy cheeks and big smiles at Kenora Catholic’s Ski and Snowboard Program. Students are having an awesome time learning to ski or snowboard, all while spending time with friends at the ski club.

Nolan, a student at St. Louis School Living Arts School, said he was a little nervous at first, “I was kind of nervous going up the lift at first, but I got the hang of it right away, and I am really good at it now. My favourite thing about the program is that we get to go skiing and spend time with our friends.”

Megan Derouard, Athletic and Active Living Lead, organized the program in partnership with Mount Evergreen Ski club.

“Not all learning takes place in the classroom,” says Megan. “That’s why we provide our students with important physical, mental and extracurricular opportunities like learning to ski and snowboard. It’s a great form of exercise, and although it isn’t a team sport, learning to ski is actually very social. The fresh air and new friendships help keep our students smiling while building confidence and learning new skills.”

Tia, a Grade 4 student from St. John Paul II School, is enjoying the program. “I think it’s a really good idea that Kenora Catholic did this because people who don’t know how to ski get to learn how to ski. I started off on the bunny hill, then I worked my way up on the big, big hill, and I will probably go to the skyline hill next. I learned how to ski, and I learned how easy it can be to ski and how to jump. My favourite part is going fast down the steep hills.”

Students from Grades 4 - 8 from St. John Paul II School, St. Louis Living Arts School, École Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys and St. Thomas Aquinas High School could register for the program offered in partnership with Mount Evergreen Ski Club. The program wraps up on Friday, March 10, right in time for spring break.

Thank you to all the volunteers, ski patrol and families for helping make this program such a huge success.
