The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released school board results for Grades 3 and 6 assessments in reading, writing and mathematics, Grade 9 applied and academic mathematics as well as results for the Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).

The annual EQAO assessments were written last spring by students across the province. The assessments measure the skills and abilities of students in relation to the Ontario curriculum. Results track the percentage of students at or above the provincial standard (Levels 3 or 4).

Quotations:

"Mathematics is a priority across the system and we will ensure that it is identified as a goal with measurable results on all of our School Improvement Plans and the Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement," says Phyllis Eikre, Director of Education. "We have designated mathematics leads in all of our elementary schools who are available, daily, to focus on assisting teachers in acquiring deeper levels of content knowledge, and diversified instructional
strategies in mathematics."

"In addition to increasing our focus on mathematics we will continue to emphasize the importance of literacy across the elementary panel," said Paul White, Superintendent of Instructional Services. "We will build upon the recent successes in both the primary and junior panels to continue to increase our students' achievement in all areas."

"Our Trustees are concerned that Ontario students may be losing the ability to do mental math in the current curriculum and need a better understanding of day to day basic mathematics. We will be working with the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association to share our concerns and provide various recommendations to the Ministry of Education. We are recommending the Ministry implement additional mathematics courses at the secondary level, such as money-sense, trades entry level mathematics and accounting to better prepare our students for everyday life and a variety of pathways." - Frank Bastone, Chair
