shoe charmsStudents in Megan Baker's 1/2 class at École Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys recently completed their first community design challenge. Organizers of the Tracy Morwood Memorial run approached the class and asked them if they could design a shoe charm for the participants of the run. The run was in honour of a beloved Kenora teacher who recently lost her battle with cancer. The students were asked to create the charms with a few specifications. They had to be pink, heart shaped and be able to attached to a shoe lace. The students quickly went to work on the design challenge. They googled other shoe charms to get their minds wrapped around how to get the charm to attach to a shoe lace. Once they had the design concept figured out each student had an opportunity to design their own version of the charm. Tracey's son Elliot visited the class and chose the two designs that he liked best. The class then went into mass production and printed 250 charms. The charms were worn on the shoelaces of the participants of the Tracy Morwood Memorial run.

"This project was very meaningful to my students and they were empathetic to Tracy's family especially Elliot. The students are very proud that the charms they created will stay on the shoes of those who had a love for Tracy and running. They will think of her every time they put their shoes on and see the charm. "

The students have a 3D Makerbot printer in their class that they have been learning to master all school year with various design challenges. They design 3 dimensional objects using specialized software then they print the objects on their 3D printer.
