Students increased their hockey skills at St. Louis School's Hockey Skills Development Program

St. Louis School wrapped up the last day of its Hockey Skills Development Pilot Program on March 9th with a scrimmage. The 8-week program promoted health and physical activity through the sport of hockey as well as helping students increase their hockey and skating skills.

Students were thrilled with the program:

"The program was really good," says Kyra a grade 4 student who played the goalie position. "Coach Dave taught us all the basics, and he helped me to improve catching high pucks."

"Honestly, I'm not the best player on my team, so I can get better at this," says Ashton a grade 6 student. "Coach Dave was great. My favorite part was the scrimmage today. It was a lot of fun."

"The program has definitely been a benefit to our school," says Johnny a grade 6 student. "It gave kids a chance to play hockey that have never played it before and really helped me to improve my shooting, skating, crossovers and pivots. I want to give a big thank you to all the people that organized the program."

The students had nothing but great things to say about Coach Dave Turner who coached the 8-week program along with his assistant Travis Bean. "We saw great improvement in the kids that have never played hockey before. We have seen a 100% improvement in these kids' skill development. I love coaching and any knowledge, skill or wisdom I can impart is a great feeling."

Principal Trudy Cederwall talks about what it took to bring the program together: "The parents, grandparents and volunteers have truly made this program a success. Without being asked, they pitched right in. Mr. Biehn was here every week tying up skates, parents were dropping hockey equipment off and picking it up and the staff at St. Louis School have been running the school while I am at the hockey program. Coach Dave has the patience of Job and is always positive with the kids. They love coming to the program, and it's been an amazing program that I am very proud of."

Close to 40 students from St. Louis School participated in the 8-week program, which ran twice per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Active Living Lead, Megan Derouard, worked closely with the school to implement the pilot project.

On the last day of the Hockey Skills Development Program students played a fun scrimmage. The scrimmage brought together all the skills learned throughout the 8-week program.

Trudy Cederwall says the program was such a success thanks to the volunteers who helped. Mr. Biehn was at the program each day to help tie-up skates for students.
