Teacher Katie Jackson upped the ante for her grade 8 healthy eating class by challenging the students in a Chopped competition after the popular television show. Four teams of students faced off all week by taking a list of ingredients and making up a recipe using those ingredients. Day 1 they made a smoothie and Day 2 the students made a healthy snack. In the final competition on Day 3 they had to make a dessert using a basket of ingredients which included white chocolate chips, blueberries, zucchini, pineapple, coconut, plain ripple chips and bacon. Each day a team was 'chopped' from the competition.
Katie Jackson talks about the completion, "our class has become a little family and I thought this would be a really fun way to challenge the students to use all the skills they have learned all semester. The students have had to work together as a team and become really creative in their cooking. I want them to leave this class and be able to continue cooking and making healthy meals."
Ashley Shouldice, Teacher and Megan Derouard, Active Living Lead played the role of judges and provided feedback to each team on their recipes. The winning team of the Chopped competition was Jayd Brooks, Elise Leonard and Logan McKie calling themselves the Super Cooks. The team threw together a recipe they called Piece of Joy when they faced off against the Dynamic Duo in a competition for the trophy and the last team standing in Chopped.
Jayd Brooks, Super Cook team member talks about the game "it was really fun to challenge each other and work against the clock. You can feel the pressure and it's exciting. We've learned how to make things without using a recipe and how to work together as a team. We've had a lot of fun."
The Super Cooks won a trophy, a medal and a gift card to Safeway so they can continue making healthy recipes.
