Grade 3 students in Sharon Remmerswaal, Glenda Long and Robin Shouldice's classes at Pope John Paul II School are embarking on an Entrepreneurial Adventure. The classes have teamed up for The Learning Partnership's Entrepreneurial Adventure program.

The students will be planning an entrepreneurial project in the community to raise money for a local charity. Through Entrepreneurial Adventure students:

  • are paired with business partners

  • create and launch a business venture

  • donate profits to their favorite charity

  • develop 21st century skills including, entrepreneurship, communication, critical thinking, collaboration and social responsibility

The entrepreneurs recently kicked off their learning by inviting one of Kenora's entrepreneurs, Mike Grieves, from Stuff Magazine and Fifth Hammer Marketing Group into the classroom to talk about his businesses. Grieves spent time sharing knowledge about what entrepreneurship is and that businesses need a product or service, a location and a market.

"Mike is a very engaging and knowledgeable business person," says Sharon Remmerswaal, teacher. "It was a pleasure to have him speak to us. The students really enjoyed him and he's going to be a great resource to our project."

Participating mentors include: Scott Green, Green Adventures, Val Williams from Bank of Montreal, Heather Gropp, Tourism Development for the City of Kenora and Mike Grieves from Stuff Magazine and Fifth Hammer.

Teacher Sharon Remmerswaal talks about what's happening next, "our next steps are going to be to choose our product or service and then determine what resources we need to get it started."

From the Learning Partnership: 'The Entrepreneurial Adventure Program is a hands-on entrepreneurial journey for students in Grades K -12. It is designed to develop students' enterprising spirit, financial literacy, innovative thinking and social responsibility. To date, these student business ventures have raised $2.9 million for charities!'
