Students take the reins during St. John’s Leadership Day

St. John School was handed over to students for Leadership Day's performance and expo during this year's Catholic Education Week. Parents got to see firsthand how The Leader in Me, a 21st Century learning St. John hosts Leader in Me expoprogram, is shaping their child's development.

Student Olivia Ewen explained that her class's habit was 'Sharpen the Saw'. There are seven different habits under the Leader in Me program. 'Sharpen the Saw' means eating right, exercising, getting sleep, spending time with family and friends, and learning in lots of ways and places, not just in school.

"We did a skit for how to sharpen the saw at school and home. There were also pictures of everyone in the class on what they like to do to sharpen the saw. My picture was about me making soaps. I was stirring it with a stir stick," she said.

During the expo, parents could visit their child's class and see what they've been working on. They were then treated to a performance from the different classes, all of which highlighted the different habits.

"The Grade 1 and 2 class did a true story of the three little pigs and it was hilarious. Their habit was 'Seek first to understand and then be understood.' It was about how people say how the big bad wolf is so big and bad. This story was about the three little pigs, a sneeze and a cup of sugar," said Ewen.

The play was a fun way to focus on the habit which aims to teach students to understand a person or situation first before making assumptions or decisions.

The Leadership Day wrapped up another successful year of the Leader in Me Program. Ewen finished by speaking about what she learned this year.

"I've learned so much about different habits and how to take care of your body, soul and mind, it's so cool," she said. "Most schools you don't know everyone from different classes. But in this school you know everyone, you meet them at assemblies."
