MP Bob Nault giving a presentation to the class

The students in Tom Doherty's grade 5/6 class at St. John School had a very special visitor on January 20th. MP Honourable Robert Nault spent the afternoon providing a presentation, talking with the students, answering questions and posing for........selfies! The students enjoyed learning more about parliament and Mr. Nault's role within our government.

Teacher Tom Doherty talks about why he invited Mr. Nault to his class: "Right now our class is learning about People and Environments: The Role of Government and Responsible Citizenship in Social Studies. Mr. Nault talked about his role as our member of parliament and what the government does for the students and constituents in the riding."

They asked questions about the Nipigon River Bridge, bringing a new arena to Red Lake, regional transportation such as Greyhound, the northern road that would serve First Nation communities north of Red Lake and what it would take to have a "Starbucks" in Red Lake.

This is what the students had to say:

"I love that he let us call him Bob and that he was so kind. I loved that he talked about his kids and my favourite part was when he told us about his life." - Haylen - Grade 6

"I liked it when he introduced himself as Bob and it was cool to have a "selfie" with him. I liked how he answered questions like what happened to the Nipigon River Bridge and how the federal government plans to fix it. I felt very proud to be a SJS student because he said we asked great questions and were very knowledgeable." - Rylie - Grade 5

"I liked the way Mr. Nault answered the questions that were asked like about 'Starbucks coming to Red Lake', He was so kind and I liked that he told us to call him "Bob". It made me feel proud to be in Grade 5/6 because he came just to talk to us." - Tianna - Grade 5

"Mr. Nault's presentation was very good because he made me realize how important it is to learn about 'good government'. I liked how he shared about his family and would have liked to learn Ojibwe or Cree. I was proud of my class because they listened to what he said and asked many questions." - Tyleen - Grade 5

"The highlight for me was watching the students interact with Mr. Nault and seeing the mutual respect for what both Mr. Nault and the students were saying to each other," says Tom Doherty. "I was proud of how engaged the students were in their discussions and that they have strong opinions about issues in our area."

A special thank you to Mr. Nault and his team for spending time at St. John School.
