2017 KCDSB Christmas GreetingFresh and modern with a strong Catholicity message were the top three requirements for the design challenge of the 2017 Christmas Greeting. The KCDSB hired St. Thomas Aquinas High Schools' Communication and Technology Class to design the Board's Christmas greeting as part of an authentic learning project for the students.

This year the judging panel used a new strategy to decide the winning greeting. "We had a hard time deciding so we put it out to a vote," explained, Teacher Barry Kraynyk. "We invited senior administration, principals, trustees and board office staff to have their say in choosing the graphic. This is a culminating project for my class and it's an authentic learning experience. It gives the students a chance to participate in a real project with real outcomes that serve an authentic purpose as a design piece. "

A modernized rendition of Jesus' manger took the top place, earning Grade 12 student, Miguel a $100 gift card.

Miguel spoke about his winning design. "I decided to go with a big image as a focal piece so I used the picture of the manger with the light shining on it. I added the titles and the elements I thought would fit nicely with it. The project was a lot of fun. I enjoyed working on the card and I'm happy that I won."

Miguel's design will represent the Kenora Catholic District School Board's Christmas Greeting for 2017. The greeting will be inserted in the Kenora Daily Miner and News, sent across the province to school boards and the Ministry of Education and shared on the board's social media spaces.

Frank Bastone, Chair of the Board has an invested interest in the greeting. His signature is included in the design. Bastone attended the announcement to meet the students and spoke about the winning design. "It's a beautiful design and I'm glad to be part of the selection process. It was a great job by all the students. This reinforces the values that are at the core of our Catholic education system."

Bastone plans to send the greeting to family and friends to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas from the Kenora Catholic District School Board.
