Going into its fifth year, the St. Louis School Choir brings joy and the love music to the choir members and those able to hear them sing. This year the choir has 28 students from Grades 5 and 6.

Teacher Kerri Favreau talks about the purpose of the choir. "The original purpose of the choir was to bring joy to the students and others. Choirs foster a sense of belonging, and singing is a powerful tool to improve mental health and well-being."

The choir has taken on many projects, including leading Prayer Services and Masses, Remembrance Day Services, Christmas Caroling at the Hospital and local Nursing Home and participation in community events like the Festival of Trees and the Kenora District Festival of the Arts.

"Being involved in the choir has been a very moving experience," says Kerri. "I have seen first hand how singing in the group builds the students' confidence and connection with others. We have so much fun together."

The St. Louis School Choir originally started out as a lunchtime club, sponsored by the Catholic Parent Council. The Council donated funds to work with local Vocal Instructor, Olivia Whiddon. In the following years, the school was able to continue their development with Olivia through the Artist in Residence Program.

This year, the choir was blessed as the Lake of the Woods Community Foundation sponsored the purchase of choir gowns. The gowns increase the sense of pride and unity the students feel when they are sharing their gift of song with others.
