Students at St. Louis School got a chance to try out pickleball for the first time before the end of the school year. Teacher Sarah Hicks started the club to introduce the sport to students.

"I thought it would be awesome to try a new sport. Since my CrossFit and judo is done I thought that a new sport would be fun and I decided to try it. We play mini-games and full court games and it's a lot of fun," said Grade 6 student Leah Unrau.

Pickleball is a combination of tennis, badminton and table tennis. The game was invented in the 1960s as a backyard child's game but has become one of the fastest growing sports in North America. It is played on a court with four players, two on each team. Each player has a wood paddle and is trying to hit a perforated ball, like a wiffleball, over the net. A team scores a point only when the other team commits a fault.

The pickleball club at St. Louis School saw about a dozen students give it a shot. Grade 6 student, Josh Pitt, was glad he decided to try it out.

"Mrs. Hicks invited us to come and play, and it's a lot of fun," he said.

The club wrapped up their first season by hosting members of the media. They were invited to come and learn about the sport and then take part in a short game.

The City of Kenora has an active pickleball club with regular game times at Garrow Park for both beginners and experts.
