Ontario's high school graduation rate has increased to 85.5 per cent - the highest level in the province's history, with more students than ever graduating with the skills and knowledge they need to reach their full potential.

For the second year in a row, Ontario is publishing school board level graduation rates from across the province. This gives parents, students, teachers and school boards access to data that can inform their efforts to improve student achievement.

In Kenora, the Kenora Catholic District School Board has one high school and its five-year rate is 77.5 per cent. This is just above the rate of Northwestern Ontario schools who averaged 75 per cent. It is important to remember that this number represents all students who started school at St. Thomas Aquinas High school in grade nine in the 2010/11 school year. These students are counted as the cohort for the school whether they remained at St. Thomas Aquinas High School or not. We are able to track all students who are in any school in Ontario as long as it is not federally funded. The graduation rates reported do not include students who successfully completed the Ontario Secondary School Certificate or the Certificate of Accomplishment.

The school has been deeply involved in a number of innovative programs that help to boost the success of students. These include our work in Specialist High Skills Majors, Duel Credits and Cooperative Education.

Quotation:

"Across Kenora Catholic, at each school, we are continuing to focus on opportunities to include student voice and student choice. We will continue to explore opportunities, new programs and strategies that support each student in attaining their Ontario Secondary School Diploma at the secondary level and we will continue to use student joy as one measurement of our success," says Mary Cunningham, Superintendent of Instructional Services. "The Kenora Catholic District School Board will continue to support students to achieve success and to be healthy, well-balanced Catholic graduates."
