Please join the Kenora Catholic District School Board in congratulating and offering best wishes to Mary Cunningham on the announcement of her retirement. Mary Cunningham will be retiring effective August 31, 2017, after 14 years of dedicated servant leadership to the Kenora Catholic District School Board.

"In his letter to Archbishop Vincent Nichols on the occasion of the Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving for his Cardinalate, Pope Francis wrote, "it is simply a service which calls for a broader vision and a more expansive heart. This statement immediately brings to mind Mary Cunningham," writes Phyllis Eikre, Director of Education. "She is the embodiment of this mission in the Kenora Catholic District School Board and Northwestern Ontario."

  • Mary began her teaching career in Cobalt/Haileybury High School. She soon moved to New Liskeard, where she taught at the secondary level and was a department head. In September 2003, Mary moved to Kenora to join the Kenora Catholic District School Board as Curriculum Coordinator. This position enabled Mary to demonstrate her strong Catholic leadership and her caring and compassionate manner with students, staff and parents. In 2010 Mary began the position of Superintendent of Instructional Services and has held this position for the past seven years.

  • Mary's discipleship is about being present and connecting with those whom she serves in the real world. She is always available and present to people. She holds the gift of listening, reflecting and helping people to discover their leadership skills and find their path. This gift has led to student achievement in academics, arts and athletics throughout the board.

  • We would be remiss not to mention Mary's incredible gift of capturing and creating joy through all that she says and does. Mary creates joy in our schools, offices and at every meeting she attends. You would find Mary leading board games and challenges to break up the winter blahs, leaving handwritten personalized notes and treasures that she finds in her travels, transforming spaces with her twinkling decorations or making you feel like you are the most important person in the world. At the center, Mary has always been about people and relationships. She has made the Kenora Catholic District School Board a joyful place for students, staff, families and guests.

Please join us in thanking Mary Cunningham for her contributions and servant leadership and wishing her much joy and happiness in her retirement and her travels to discover the world. May God truly bless Mary in her next big adventure.
