Over 40 students in Grades 9 - 12 from St. Thomas Aquinas High School will bring a prom to the residents at Pinecrest this Saturday. Students will be visiting the residents before their prom begins at the high school. The Pinecrest prom will kick-off with a first dance, and everyone will be dressed up in the theme of a 1920's Soiree.

Date:

Saturday, May 13th

Student Visit:

6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

Location:

District of Kenora Home and Community Support Services - Pinecrest 1220 Valley Drive

"This initiative is completely student-driven," says Michelle Sawa, School Principal. "I'm proud of our students for creating this connection and planning this prom with Community Support Services. Our students are caring, and it's a nice thing to do. I think our students are going to take an experience away with them that will be memorable."

Annika Pedersen, Grade 12 student, talks about how the idea got started.

"I started volunteering this semester at Pinecrest and working with their Recreation Therapy Lead, Theresa Wilson, and we decided this was a project we would do together. The response from students has been amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing the residents dressed up and excited. I think this event is going to make them happy."

"This is the first time that we've hosted an event like this, and we are excited," says Theresa Wilson, Recreation Therapy Lead at Community Support Services. "We've had posters up for the past month to collect donations for outfits for the residents. We are expecting 50 - 60 residents to participate in the prom. The residents will be touched that the youth think it's cool to stop by and visit them on prom night. The enthusiasm of the students is going to lift many spirits."

Following the visit from the students at St. Thomas Aquinas High School the residents will continue their prom with cocktails, a special bingo and other games. Family members are encouraged to attend.

Media are welcome to attend and take photographs.
