Pounds of Garbage for Earth Day

On Friday, April 20th, students and staff cleaned-up 220 pounds of garbage in neigbourhoods around their school for Earth Day 2018.

Grade 6 student Lucas Pavey from Ecole Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys spoke about the event. "I'm feeling pretty good about today. It looks like we've got a decent amount of garbage in the bin. Our community is a big house. You need to do spring cleaning to help keep it clean."

Pope John Paul II School's, Wonara Hatharasinghage was part of the team that cleaned up around Minto, Heenan Place and Pinecrest District Home for the Aged. "We want to help keep our community clean and we don't want to see litter everywhere, it's not good for the environment. We cleaned up every bit of garbage we saw today."

Ralph, Gayaoy, Grade 11 student from St. Thomas Aquinas High School participated in the Community Clean-Up Day. "We have been picking up garbage on Gunn Crescent, around the school and at Garrow Park, helping to make our neighbourhoods neat. It's important to help the community stay clean and look nice."

Across the city, St. Louis School was focusing their efforts in the Keewatin area and neighbourhoods around their school. They cleaned-up ten big bags of garbage.

The schools teamed up with Sierra Construction and Northern Waste and Hauling and the City of Kenora. Sierra Construction provided a bin and hauled the garbage away. The City of Kenora waived the tipping fee, provided the clear bags and disposable gloves.

Community Clean-Up Day is one of the many ways that Kenora Catholic is helping the community, and providing a values-based Catholic education that prioritizes spirituality, community and caring as part of its educational program.
