The Kenora Catholic District School Board and the Northwestern Health Unit Launches FRIENDS Program
Kenora, May 7, 2018 - The Kenora Catholic District School Board and the Northwestern Health Unit recently partnered to launch the FRIENDS program at the Kenora Catholic District School Board. The program is a social, emotional and resiliency skill-building program that is proven to reduce anxiety and provide students with tools and strategies to successfully navigate life's challenges.
"The FRIENDS program is a natural fit for us as a Catholic school system," says Sue Devlin, Mental Health Lead for the Board. "It offers a holistic approach that teaches students how to see the world through a positive lens and hone in on skills like empathy, compassion, managing stress, resiliency and developing positive relationships. We also appreciate that the program teaches students how to care for their family and friends, animals and the earth. These skills are universal and once learned can be maintained for life."
Shannon Robinson, Manager of Chronic Disease Prevention with the Health Unit states, "We are pleased to support Kenora Catholic to get this valuable program started. As part of our mandate, the Health Unit actively seeks partnerships with school boards to support and promote mental health initiatives."
