Information about COVID-19
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19), formally known as the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was identified as the cause of an outbreak, originating from Wuhan, China.

The outbreak of the virus has been evolving rapidly; however, most cases are in China with cases reported in other impacted areas, including Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.

The health and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. The Kenora Catholic District School Board takes direction from the Northwestern Health Unit, as well as the Ministry of Education, who are working closely with the Ministry of Health, Public Health Ontario and local health care providers to monitor this situation and take action as appropriate. As new information is released to school communities from the Northwestern Health Unit, we will share that information with you and post it on this website.

The following information is from the Ministry of Ontario’s 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Website.

What is the Coronavirus
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more serious respiratory infections like bronchitis, pneumonia or severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
Coronaviruses are spread mainly from person to person through close contact, for example, in a household, workplace or health care centre.

Symptoms and Treatment
Symptoms range from mild – like the flue and other common respiratory infections to severe, and can include:

• Fever
• Cough
• Difficulty breathing

The risk of severe disease may be higher in the elderly and in people with weakened immune systems.

How to Protect Yourself
Coronaviruses are spread mainly from person to person through close contact, for example, in a household, workplace or health care centre.

There is no vaccine available to protect against the 2019 novel coronavirus.

There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illness. Take these everyday steps to reduce exposure to the virus and protect your health:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer
• Sneeze and cough into your sleeve
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
• Avoid contact with people who are sick
• Stay home if you are sick.
