Students in Grades 1 and 2 at École Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys welcomed some new furry friends into their school last week. While not real, the stuffed animals represented actual living animals that the students helped sponsor through the World Wildlife Fund.

"We had a garage sale in Mme. Nason's class and then did a research project on an endangered animal," said Grade 2 student Kenzie Richards. "I thought it was a good idea because we're saving animals who are endangered across the globe, so it's kind and responsible of us."

The project was part of their almsgiving for Lent as well as their social studies curriculum which revolves around being a responsible global citizen. Students donated toys and books they no longer used for the garage sale. The proceeds raised were then given to the WWF which helps protect endangered species across the world.

"My favourite part was colouring and drawing the animals. My animal was the ferret," said Grade 1 student Daphne Batters.

Each student chose an animal they wanted to research about. They learned a lot about the endangered animals as well as how the World Wildlife Fund helps to try and save those animals. While they were initially only hoping to sponsor a few animals, the project turned out to be a huge success.

"At first they said we were only going to get one or two and then it was 14!" Keana Carter Grade 2. "I felt really good because we're responsible for [why they're endangered]. We leave plastic in the water and in their habitat."
