Presentations

New Student Trustee Takes Office
The Trustees welcomed a new Student Trustee to the boardroom table. Grade 12 student Matthew Favreau recieved his Rite of Commissioning as the new Student Trustee for the 2017 - 2018 school year. You can read the release here.

The Terry Fox Foundation Announcement
Student Trustee Matthew Favreau announced that the Kenora Catholic District School Board surpassed the $100,000 mark in donations for the Terry Fox Foundation. Schools within the board have been participating in the Terry Fox Run since 2000 and since then have collectively raised $105, 580.61 for cancer research. You can read the media release here.

KCDSB trustees The New Teacher Induction Program Overview
Dallis Novelli, Curriculum Coordinator, provided an overview of the board's mentorship program for new teachers. The program focuses on linking new teachers with a mentor. The mentor supports the new teacher by focusing on the new teacher's well-being, helping them cope with stress and accessing professional development, strategies, best practices and resources. Novelli showcased a video of new teachers who talked about what supports helped them most through the New Teacher Induction Program.

REPORTS

Staffing Report
Alison Smith, Superintendent of Business Services, provided the trustees with a report on the new teaching positions and employees hired for the 2017 - 2018 school year. Smith reported that there is a new collaborative leadership team at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, new principals at Pope John Paul II School and a principal transfer to St. Louis School.

Emergency Appointments
The trustees approved the Emergency Appointments motion to allow the Director of Education to appoint a temporary person to teach a class if there are no qualified teachers available. Eikre explained that this normally happens in the spring when new teachers graduate from University but are not yet fully qualified through the Ontario College of Teachers. This motion allows the director to utilize these graduates for a period of 10 days as outlined in Regulation 298.

Primary Class Size
Alison Smith provided a Primary Class Size Report identifying that the board is compliant with the legislation in all areas. All of the board's primary class sizes are at or below the cap of 20 students. All grade 3/4 split classes are below 23 students. The average class size for full-day kindergarten is 21.5 students and the average for all junior / intermediate classes are 22.78 students.

Good News (Addition to Agenda by Trustee Paul Landry)
Trustee Paul Landry added the item Good News to the agenda to recognize the good news stories that have recently been profiled about the Kenora Catholic District School Board. Landry shared that the Catholic Registrar released a story entitled Northern Schools Lead on Recognition, the Canadian Catholic School Trustees' Association posted a story recognizing the foyer Opening Doors of Mercy Display at St. Thomas Aquinas High School and a story about the series of innovative videos, Student Storytelling: Kenora Catholic District School Board releases Innovative Learning Video Series. The board has also received a lot of coverage from the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association, most recently the board was featured on the Together in Faith website for the story - Kenora Community Makes a Significant Contribution to Fight Against Cancer.

Student Trustee Report
Student Trustee Matthew Favreau provided his first report as the student trustee for the 2017 / 2018 school year. Matthew reported on the notable accomplishments, humanitarian activities and events happening at St. Thomas Aquinas High School during September.


Next Board Meeting
