PRESENTATIONS

Focusing on Fundamental Math

Jordan Temple, Numeracy Facilitator provided a report Focusing on Fundamental Math. Temple reported that the board is implementing recommendations and interventions from data collected during the board's research partnership with Lakehead University's Faculty of Education. Temple shared that the research identified that students at Kenora Catholic have strong connections and relationships with their teachers but they sometimes don't like math or feel confident with math. At the beginning of the 2018 - 2019 School Year, Kenora Catholic is adding a Math Support teacher in each elementary school to provide extra support for teachers and students. The board will also be setting up a tutoring system for students at St. Thomas Aquinas High School and will continue the research project with Lakehead University to gather data and explore different ways to support students in increasing math confidence. Teachers Darcy Ura, Eric Harty and students, Haley, Avery, Jesse, Josh, Jackson and Ruby provided an informative presentation and video showcasing the Music Program at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Click here to explore their detailed report.

Policy #9 - Board Operations

The Trustees approved a motion to accept the revisions to Policy #9 - Board Operations effective immediately. Click here to review the Policy.

Director of Education Appointment

The Trustees approved a motion to appoint Derek Haime as Director of Education and Secretary-Treasurer of the Kenora Catholic District School Board effective February 1, 2019. Haime joined the meeting, via Skype, and shared a few words following the motion. Read the media release or watch Derek's acceptance speech here:

Provincial Consultation Education in Ontario

Phyllis Eikre reported that the Ministry of Education is hosting an extensive province-wide consultation on Health and Physical Education Curriculum Reforms. The consultation will focus on the following areas:

  • Improving student performance in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
  • Preparing students with needed job skills, such as skilled trades and coding
  • Improving provincial standardized testing
  • Ensuring students graduate with important life skills, including financial literacy
  • Managing the use of technology in classrooms, such as cell phones
  • Building a new age-appropriate Health and Physical Education curriculum that includes subjects like mental health, sexual health education and the legalization of cannabis
  • Developing the first-ever Parents' Bill of Rights

55th Annual OCSTA Regional Meeting and Diocesan Conference Report

Frank Bastone, Chair provided a report on the 55th Annual OCSTA Regional Meeting and Diocesan Conference. Bastone reported that the trustees welcomed a visit from Beverley Eckensweiler, President and Nick Milanetti, Executive Director from the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association, at Kenora Catholic the day before the conference.

OCSTA Retirement Announcement for Jane Ponte, Executive Assistant

The trustees passed a motion that the Board will send a letter to Jane Ponte, Executive Assistant at the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association to congratulate her on her upcoming retirement and to thank her for her 30-years of dedicated service to Catholic Education.

Compliance Audit Committee Agreement 2018 - 2022

The Trustees approved two motions about the Compliance Audit Committee Agreement for 2018 - 2022. The first motion approved the agreement to establish a Compliance Audit Committee with the Rainy River District School Board, the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board, the Northwest Catholic District School, Board, the Conseil Scholair De District Catholique Des Aurores Boréales and The Kenora Catholic District School Board and the second motion approved that each board identify personnel to be appointed to the committee.
