With the new school year in full swing, it's never been more important to make an optometry appointment for your children to ensure they have the tools to succeed. Since 80% of learning is visual, academic success involves ensuring children have good vision.

The Eye See…Eye Learn® program is approved in every Ontario school board and over 60 per cent of member optometrists are participating in the program. The program offers Junior Kindergarten students a complimentary pair of glasses if they are prescribed, following an OHIP-covered eye exam with a participating optometrist.

Children who have trouble seeing can encounter difficulties at school because of their motor skills, social development, attention span and the ability to read, write and learn may be affected.

To ensure your child gets the best start to learning, the Kenora Catholic District School Board is encouraging parents to schedule their child's annual eye exam. OHIP covers annual eye exams by an optometrist or physician for anyone under the age of 20.

Some conditions such as lazy eye are most effectively treated at a young age. The Ontario Association of Optometrists recommends that every child have their first eye exam at 6 months of age to ensure proper vision development, again at 2 to 3, and subsequently every year thereafter.

In 2016 - 2017, out of all children who participated in the ESEL program, 15 per cent received glasses, which is a total of 3,365 pairs. This retails to approximately $841,250 and would not have been possible without our participating optometrists, exclusive ESEL partners OGI and Nikon, and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.
