St. Thomas Aquinas High School's drumming group, Binese Singers, were honoured with jackets today, with each member getting their own jacket with the group's new logo on the back.

Grade 9 student Tavon Redsky designed the logo and explains how he chose the imagery.

"I was just thinking of a medicine wheel and it just came to me about the Thunderbird Singers. I looked up a picture of a Thunderbird and then I drew it free-hand and it turned out great," he said. "It actually looks better than I thought. I thought it would come out wonky."

In partnership with Weekend Adventure/Taggs Source for Sports the school then had each jacket printed with the logo on the back as well as their name, Binese Singers, and the Kenora Catholic logo.

Redsky says the group came together in June and he's enjoyed being a part of it. Elder Terry Skead teaches the group, which is open to students in Grades 7-12.

"He's a good teacher," said Redsky. "He shows us new songs and when we're off beat, he'll slowly bring us back on beat with the drum. He's a great instructor."

Redsky adds that he enjoys drumming with his friends and learning new songs from each of the local First Nation communities in the Treaty #3 Territory. The group performs at various school functions as well as feasts across the Kenora Catholic campus.
