Students in Grade 5 and 6 at St. Louis School have put a new spin on a typical classroom assignment. Instead of memorizing lines and donning costumes for their French culminating play, they were inputting codes and creating their own Virtual Reality worlds or Stop-Motion videos where their characters would do the acting.

Stephanie Sweeney is the Technology Enabled Learning and Teaching teacher with the school board and she helped coordinate the project with French teacher, Theresa Clarke. Sweeney spoke about the project.

"Both of these platforms promote problem-solving and critical thinking, which is a priority when integrating technology in the classroom," she said. "With technology all around us, it's important to teach students about the difference between creating versus consuming media. By creating these 3D environments, both friends and family were able to enjoy the plays through virtual reality which gave them a unique way to experience their child's work. St. Louis School is known for its Dramatic Arts and it was great to see the students apply those skills through a digital outlet."

Students were given two plays they could use for their project, The Three Little Pigs or The Cat and the Moon. Students then had to create the play in Virtual Reality using code. They were also responsible for voicing all of the characters in their play in French.

"It's really interesting trying to watch the play. I actually didn't know at first that I had to move around to see what was going on," said parent Jessica Creason Scott. "I was really impressed with what [my daughter] created. It's crazy to see how many instruments they have to use, compared to when I went here and we had four computers for everybody."

Two groups chose to do a Stop-Motion video, which includes piecing together 1,500 images to make the characters they've drawn appear to be moving. They were also responsible for voicing the play in French and fusing it with the video.

The project is part of a new push that helps teach students to use technology in an enriching way in a learning environment.
