Students from École Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys and Pope John Paul II School kept Terry Fox's legacy alive, as they held their own Marathon of Hope on Friday afternoon.
"Terry Fox is really inspiring. I like the fact that it was only him starting off and then other people joined," said Grade 5 student at PJP II Alex Ogemah.
SMB students traveled to PJP II's gym, where everyone watched a short video about Terry Fox and his push to raise awareness and money for cancer research.
"Terry Fox had cancer in his leg and he decided to run across Canada to help support research for cancer. But when he reached Thunder Bay the cancer came back in his lung and he died. So now we're here helping raise money and support for cancer research," said Arwyn Hicks, a Grade 5 student at SMB.
After the assembly students in Kindergarten to Grade 2 ran around the field at St. Thomas Aquinas, while students in Grades 3-6 walked to Rabbit Lake and back.
"They love the run," said Principal at SMB, Nicole Kurtz. "There was one student who was supposed to get picked up and they convinced their parent to wait a little bit longer so they could do the Terry Fox run."
Every year schools are encouraged to hold their own runs as the community run is always held on a Sunday. St. Thomas Aquinas High School, St. Louis School and St. John School in Red Lake all have walks of their own planned for later in September or early October. Last year, the Kenora Catholic District School Board reached the $100,000 mark in funds raised for the Terry Fox Foundation.
