The gym at École Ste Marguerite Bourgeoys was filled with enthusiasm last week, as Grade 6 students from SMB, St. Louis School and Pope John Paul II School played games, sang songs and prayed during the National Evangelization Team (NET) Retreat.

"I think it was a great opportunity for us. There were lots of good lessons for everyone and all the schools who came," said Grade 6 students from SMB Spencer Merlino.

The nine NET members led students through a full day of spiritual development.

Circle of Students"We play some ice breaker games to build trust with the students and then we have ELA games, Experiential Learning Activities. They are games but they have lessons behind them," said NET Lead Mirjam Welling. "So for example today we played the Rome Game where people become servants if they lose games and at the end a Jesus figure comes in to redeem the servants. Those things relate to the Gospel message in that way. We always try to include those activities where they can have fun but recognize that it relates back to Jesus."

This is the first year that the NET Retreat has included both high school and elementary students. Grade 9 students traveled to Notre Dame on Tuesday followed by Grade 6 students gathering on Wednesday at SMB. Welling, who actually traveled all the way from the Netherlands to join NET Canada, said overall everything went really well.

"The students are amazing and it was really fun to get to journey with them. They were really receptive and we see God working in their hearts every day and it's awesome I have the best job ever!" she said.

NET Canada is an organization that brings together volunteers from across the country to provide full-day retreats for Catholic schools and parishes.
