Transitioning from Grade 6 to a brand new school in Grade 7 can be a bit nerve-racking for students. So, St. Thomas Aquinas High School decided to help students feel a little more at home by welcoming them into the school for a Shadow Day.

"Today we've been following around older students. We've been visiting their classes and then in the afternoon we started going around viewing the different exploratories," said Brianna Herbacz, a Grade 6 student from Pope John Paul II School.

As part of their push to make Grade 6 students feel more at home inside the school, St. Thomas Aquinas has created some new initiatives including Shadow Day. All the Grade 6 classes from St. Louis School, Pope John Paul II School and École Ste-Marguerite Bourgeoys have taken turns spending one day inside the school following around older students.

In the morning they observe core classes like math, science and English. In the afternoon they get to see some of the exploratory classes like culinary arts, music, visual art and shop.

"It was a little intimidating at first but once you get through the first 30 minutes you settle in," said PJPII Grade 6 Hudson Willett. "It's a nice learning environment. St. Thomas Aquinas is a great school, all the teachers are nice, they lead you along and make you feel comfortable."

Students enjoyed baking cookies in the culinary arts class and exploring the wood working of the older students in the shop class. Next on the agenda for Grade 6 students and their families is an Information Night on Wednesday, March 20th from 5:30-7:00 PM.
