St. Thomas Aquinas student, Chloe Poirier, was honoured at City Hall this week as councillors declared September 24-28 Childhood Cancer Awareness Week.

Poirier wrote to councillors in the summer asking them to dedicate this week to raising awareness about childhood cancer. She included some facts about childhood cancer in Canada as well as why it was important to her that the week be recognized by the City of Kenora.

According to the statistics, 4,000 children are currently living with cancer in Ontario and another 400 are diagnosed with cancer each year. Poirier has been fighting her own battle with cancer since she was two years old, she's now 14 and in Grade 9 at St. Thomas Aquinas.

Besides dedicating the week, Kenora Mayor Dave Canfield also encouraged everyone to wear gold, the assigned ribbon colour for childhood cancer.

Poirier was supported at the meeting by her family as well as her friends Aislyn Breiter and Sarah Chosen.
