Dr. marian Small meets with math leads

Renowned math educator Dr Marian Small sat down with Kenora Catholic math leads to discuss ways of improving math understanding in the classroom. The visit was part of Kenora Catholic's renewed focus on math in order to improve students' academic achievements in the subject.

"These teachers are leads in their schools and so they influence lots of other people and I really think they're seeking someone who has had similar experience to say 'This is how I change people' or 'This is how I help people' and what are some of the problems they confront so I can say, 'Here's what I've done in this similar situation,'" said Dr Small.

Math leads from all Kenora Catholic schools spent one full day sitting down with her to go over the MathUp program. MathUp was introduced last year to all the math leads at Kenora Catholic who help support the math teachers.

Dr. Marian Small speaks"The MathUp program is designed to support the three-part lesson in the classroom," said KCDSB Numeracy Facilitator Jordan Temple. "The three-part lesson is minds on, hands-on or activity phase, and then discussion/consolidation. The program is designed to meet every math expectation in each Grade, in a way that meets all the curriculum requirements."

Temple said they started using the program to continue developing the way in which teachers are actually teaching math in their classrooms. Meeting with Dr Small to go over the resources offered was a part of signing up for the program. Dr Small explained what she hopes the leads will take away from the meeting.

"I think for most it will be that they feel some confidence that they were doing some good things anyway or that 'Oh that's a good strategy I might try that with my colleagues,'" she concluded.
